Three
games without a goal represents some sort of mini-crisis in the world
of Kane. There is a compliment about his prolific status at the heart of
the warped logic which claims something is amiss if he fails to score
at the same rate as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Statistical
wizards were conjuring up his disappointing ratio from open play as if
those scored from set-pieces might not count. This one, however, most
certainly counted. Kane lost his marker and leapt to convert a near-post
corner with a fabulous header, early in the second half.
The
momentum shifted. Spurs took control. Moments later the England striker
was plunging back towards the depths of inner turmoil when he launched a
penalty high into the crowd. It was an ugly miss and Kane stamped at
the turf to indicate it might be to blame.
Pochettino
had to sweat for longer than he should have but his team ran away with
it in the end as Southampton's 10 men tired. Son Heung-min came off the
bench to inject pace on the break and scored Tottenham's third in the
85th minute. Dele Alli added a fourth, his second of the game, to give
the score-line a misleading gloss. It had been tough.
Saints
were firmly in the contest until Redmond was punished for the foul on
Alli which led to the penalty skied by Kane, and left his team a man
down for more than half an hour.
Redmond
stumbled and fell into the back of Alli as he prepared to shoot, and
was adjudged by referee Dean to have made the foul without making a
genuine attempt to win the ball. Television replays showed the contact
started outside the box and Southampton were still exploring the various
angles of complaint as they trudged off with the officials at the final
whistle.

For
Claude Puel and his players, it must have seemed like a very long time
since Virgil van Dijk headed them into the lead after just 69 seconds.
Spurs
midfielder Victor Wanyama, who started clumsily on his first return to
the club he left for £11million in the summer, conceded a free-kick and
it was swung into the penalty area by James Ward-Prowse. Van Dijk
climbed high and early, up above Jan Vertonghen and thumped a firm
header into the bottom corner past Hugo Lloris.
Tottenham
were again without Toby Alderweireld who had a virus. He hopes to be
available for the game at Watford on Sunday but his fitness is a concern
for Spurs.
Vertonghen
and Kyle Walker are banned and unavailable for the game at Vicarage
Road after collecting yellow cards — their fifth of the season — during
the tempestuous closing stages at St Mary's.
If
the FA's disciplinary chiefs decide to take a closer look at a
first-half flashpoint when Vertonghen caught Jay Rodriguez in the face
with his hand, he may be out for longer.

Alderweireld
has started just twice since a knee injury in mid-October and
Pochettino's defence seldom looks as solid without him.
Spurs
were careless during the opening phase, under pressure from Saints, who
were quick and energetic, and might have stretched the lead when
Rodriguez and Redmond went close before Alli levelled.
A
disguised pass from Mousa Dembele found Moussa Sissoko on the left and
his cross took a deflection and looped into the air. Van Dijk was
stranded far too deep, out of position, which enabled Alli to set
himself and glanced a header in off the far post.
Spurs
were lucky to be level but the good fortune helped them settle. They
went ahead for the first time when Kane gave Oriol Romeu the slip and
headed Christian Eriksen's corner past Fraser Forster in the 52nd
minute.
Kane
missed from the spot and Eriksen rattled the woodwork but Puel's
attempts to salvage something from the game came to nothing. The Saints
boss made changes but the visitors took advantage of the open spaces and
fatigue.

seventh of the season, to keep Spurs in the thick of the scramble for a
top-four place.
It was at this stage last season that Pochettino's side set off on a run which would develop into a genuine title challenge.
That
sequence of results began with a hard-fought win at Southampton and
Spurs will hope these three points have a similar impact.
