Germany out of the World Cup: How an extraordinary afternoon unfolded
NEW The unthinkable has happened - Germany , reigning world champions, the consummate tournament team, are out of the World Cup. Their failure to beat South Korea on Wednesday afternoon, combined with Sweden's comfortable win over Mexico , saw Joachim Low's men exit Russia at the group stage - their first World Cup elimination at this point for 80 years. Sweden won the group by beating Mexico 3-0 in the other match taking place at the same time, meaning Germany needed to defeat South Korea to get through in second place.

NEW MEXICO 0-3 SWEDEN: Sweden are through to the knockout stages of the World Cup after thrashing Mexico 3-0 in Ekaterinburg to seal their passage into the last 16.

The Monterrey player picked up the fastest card in World Cup history when he clattered into the back of Sweden striker Ola Toivonen after just 15 seconds during the Group F clash on Wednesday.
